The 9th Man, June 27, 2023

When an old friend calls for help, Luke Daniels doesn’t hesitate. But tracing the threat leads him to a long-established DC kingmaker whose motivations are unbelievable: the need to hide what really happened on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. History has recorded it wrong, and he will stop at nothing to ensure Luke never makes it right.

Steve, like his series character Cotton Malone from Templar Legacy fame, loves cranberry juice! We found a Cranberry Ginger Fizz Mocktail recipe just perfect for summer days here.

Our own Rogue, Wall Street Journal bestselling author Isabella Maldonado wore a gun and badge in real life before turning to crime writing. A graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico and the first Latina to attain the rank of captain in the Fairfax County Police Department just outside DC, she retired as the Commander of Special Investigations and Forensics. Her books have been translated into 22 languages, with one soon to be a Netflix feature film starring Jennifer Lopez.

A Killer’s Game, June 1, 2023

FBI agent and former military codebreaker Daniela “Dani” Vega witnesses a murder on a Manhattan sidewalk. When Dani suspects a complex conspiracy, the only way to take down the mastermind is from the inside, forcing her to partner with the assassin-turned-informant, Gustavo Toro. Together they must infiltrate the inner circle at a remote facility—except it’s a trap. For all of them.

Now Dani must stay undercover, unravel a bizarre conspiracy, and survive lethal puzzles. But will Toro be friend or foe? Because in this killer’s game, everything is real: the paranoia, the desperation, and the body count. And only one person can make it out alive.

Isabella’s favorite snack: Pastelillos de Carne (Puerto Rican Meat Turnovers):
A traditional Puerto Rican meat turnover, similar to an empanada but it’s not an empanada. It’s a pastelillo. Recipe by Linda Arceo, available on her website.

Like Isabella’s main character, Daniela “Dani” Vega, Linda is a proud Nuyorican (Puerto Rican in New York City).

She also has some fabulous cocktails, and this is one Dani Vega would approve of. The cool thing about this drink is that it’s red, white, and blue, colors of both the American flag and the Puerto Rican flag:

Red, White and Blue Layered Shot—recipe by Linda Arceo and Captain Morgan
Ingredients
• 0.5 oz. Captain Morgan LocoNut
• 0.5 oz. Grenadine
• 0.5 oz. Blue Curacao
Directions
• Pour Grenadine into a shot glass.
• Slowly pour the Captain Morgan LocoNut over the back of a spoon so it floats on the Grenadine.
• Repeat the process with the Blue Curacao.

Richard North Patterson is the New York Times bestselling author of 22 previous novels, and is also the author of Fever Swamp, a nonfiction narrative of the 2016 presidential campaign derived from his essays and reportage for the Huffington Post. A former trial lawyer, he was the SEC liaison to the Watergate special prosecutor, and appeared on national shows from Today and Good Morning America to Inside Politics. He lives in San Francisco and Martha’s Vineyard with his wife, Dr. Nancy Clair.

Trial, June 13, 2023

A Black eighteen-year-old voting rights worker, Malcolm Hill, is stopped by a white sheriff’s deputy on a dark country road in rural Georgia. His single mother, Allie, America’s leading voting rights advocate, restlessly awaits his return before police inform her that Malcolm has been arrested for murder. In Washington D.C., the rising, young, white congressman Chase Brevard of Massachusetts is watching the morning news with his girlfriend, only to find his life transformed in a single moment by the appearance of Malcolm’s photograph. Suddenly all three are enveloped in a media firestorm that threatens their lives—especially Malcolm’s.

Ric’s favorite drink—and also his character’s—is a gin martini made with Aviation Gin and Dolin vermouth.

Kate White is the New York Times best-selling author of eight standalone psychological thrillers, as well as eight Bailey Weggins mysteries, including Such a Perfect Wife, a finalist for an International Thriller Writers Best Paperback Original Award. Skyler Moore is a struggling artist who receives a bewilderingly large, life-changing inheritance from a man she spent a single night with twelve years ago—and she has no idea why. The man’s family is not happy, and his widow vows revenge. To protect herself, Skyler must figure out the message the man was trying to send her with the bequest—but the answer may prove fatal.

Skyler is neither a good cook or a good eater but at one point she throws together some cannellini beans and tuna fish, with some vinaigrette. Other than that, she lives on wine and Diet Coke.
