On Tour with Dead Writers: As a mystery writer, she was admired by Truman Capote, Pearl Buck, Nagaio Marsh, Agatha Christie, and Evelyn Waugh and is considered one of the top women writers of noir. This acclaimed mystery and suspense author wrote 27 novels during her career along with short stories, screenplays, poems, radio stories, and a memoir – and she did this also while living with a husband who eclipsed her in popularity and who chose to write under a pseudonym because she became famous as a writer first.
