Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1904, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. Her journalism career took her to newspaper jobs in Missouri, New Mexico, and New York, which was followed by graduate studies at the University of New Mexico and Columbia University without graduating from either school.
She and her husband, two daughters and son, lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1944, she moved to Los Angeles to write film scripts and reviewed mysteries for the Albuquerque Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Herald-Tribune and other newspapers.
Her novels were popular during her day. In fact, three of her stories were adapted into feature films, and one was remade for television in 1964. Meanwhile, she penned literary criticisms of mystery novels, a craft she said she immensely enjoyed.
But then, her novels faded in the limelight, available intermittently in print. She was nearly forgotten until much later when her works were re-published.
In 1961, at the peak of her career, she returned to Santa Fe and stopped writing to care for her dying mother and to support her children and grandchildren. She said her domestic responsibilities made writing too difficult. Although, she had one last critically acclaimed novel yet to write.
